Week 7_ Flipped Learning in ELT

I had very traditional ideas about classroom instruction that involved teacher-centered lectures and student practice during class time. However, after learning about flipped classroom models, my perspective on language teaching has really transformed.

The core principle behind flipped classrooms is that students can gain initial exposure to new content through pre-class activities like watching instructional videos or reading assignments. This frees up classroom time for more interactive and collaborative learning experiences between the teacher and students. I was quite skeptical at first that students would actually do the pre-work, but I understand now how well-designed pre-class activities can effectively engage learners.

From the materials I have read, I am convinced that putting into practice the Micro Flipped Classroom approach would be very beneficial to my students whose language proficiency ranges from A1+ to A2. In order to assist them in learning and improving, I will develop short video lectures or written materials for independent study before coming to school. These resources will be created with a view of being clear, easily understandable and appropriate for their level of knowledge. When we meet in class I will use interactive activities like group discussions, games, role-plays as well as practice exercises to enhance their learning experience. Additionally, I would give individualized support to students who are lagging behind, address questions raised by any one student and offer feedback that is helpful.

In implementing this approach, there are several supportive tools and apps that I will employ. Zoom is an important platform for virtual meetings enabling live interactions where students can hold discussions or engage in collaborative activities among themselves. Google Classroom will be used for sharing documents and lectures so that at home before classes, the learners can find and read them. Edpuzzle will be used to design engaging video lectures that feature interactive participation from learners in the form of questions and exercises during watching. I believe these pre-class resources along with in-class interactive activities and individual support through a Micro Flipped Classroom model can greatly benefit my A1-A2 level students.
